WE’RE A FAMILY
INTRODUCTION
Considered by our parents and students as an extension of their family unit, and as a partner in parenting their child, our unique 4–6-year-old, life-skill programme provides families with practical tools to compliment parenting, and to help your child to better understand their feelings to make positive choices to everyday life scenarios.
At this age, your child will be starting to make the transition from being parent centred, to exploring some independence, your child may be experiencing new emotions, feelings, and behaviours, they may even be starting out at full-time school and spending less time in the familiarity of home, leaving some children feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, or upset.
Research says that exposing your child to positive, parent inclusive experiences at this age group is not only essential for your child’s mental health & happiness, but also because these are the key years when your child starts to develop their mindset for who they will become as an adult.
Together, as a family, we help to develop the fundamental life-skills for your child’s age and stage of development in a fun and family friendly environment, where skills learned on the mats will help your child to excel at home, school, and in all areas of their everyday life.
LEARNING LIFE-SKILLS
The Excel Ministrike Programme is so much more than kicking and punching, it’s a life-skill programme that teaches children of their age group in a unique way, we incorporate not just what they will learn, but how they learn, our Excel Parents say that they feel like we are an extension of their family unit in helping to parent their child.
We know that this age and stage of development is a critical period for your child in laying the groundwork for their future success. By prioritising positive experiences, supportive environments, and intentional development during this time, caregivers and educators play a significant role in shaping a child’s personality, health and well-being.
Early childhood is a time when cognitive foundations, such as language & social skills, problem-solving abilities, and executive functions are established. Exposing your child to enriching experiences in a stimulating, supportive environment during this period supports cognitive development which will help them to excel, especially when just starting out in school and becoming more independent from you as their parents.
What sets us apart is our passion in involving you in your child’s journey. Our classes are designed for both child and parent to participate, creating a supportive environment that strengthens the parent-child bond. Children who spend quality time with their parents are much more likely to exhibit positive behaviours. The attention, guidance, and positive reinforcement received during the classes contribute to the development of good values and behaviours. Shared experiences create lasting fond memories that children will carry into adulthood.
We are proud to see so many of our Ministrike students develop into confident, focused, happy & healthy young adults as they graduate through the Excel Life-Skill Programmes.
THE BENEFITS
CONFIDENCE BUILDING
As your child feels a sense of accomplishment by learning basic moves & techniques, this success coupled with parents praise and encouragement, will over time, contribute to your child growing in confidence and self-esteem.
FOCUS AND PAYING ATTENTION SKILLS:
Our classes require your child to focus on the teacher and follow directions. This helps in the development of basic attention and concentration skills, positively impacting their ability to learn in other settings. Don’t worry if your child doesn’t seem to be doing this at first – practice makes progress.
DISCIPLINE AND STRUCTURE:
Learning martial arts at a young age introduces both you and your child to the concepts of discipline and structured activities. Following instructions and adhering to a class routine helps to develop a sense of order. Children at this age and stage of development learn best through repetition and routine.
GOAL SETTING & LEARNING TO EARN:
The belt system in martial arts introduces your child to the concept of setting and achieving goals. This early exposure can lay the foundation for a positive attitude towards challenges and accomplishments. The concept of an early work ethic can also be established in learning to work hard to earn their belts.
FUN PHYSICAL ACTIVITY FOR YOU AND YOUR CHILD:
Our Ministrike classes for young children are designed to be enjoyable and engaging. This not only introduces your child to physical activity in a fun way but also helps develop a lifelong love for staying active.
IMPROVED MOTOR SKILLS:
Our classes involve a variety of movements that enhance your child’s coordination, balance, and fine motor skills. These physical improvements are crucial for your child’s overall development. Over time we often see children who train with us exceed their NHS developmental milestones.
SOCIAL INTERACTION AND COOPERATION:
Participating in martial arts classes provides opportunities for your child to interact with their peers. Children of this age group communicate more by using their bodies through mimicking behaviours and body language. Simple partner exercises and parent participation promote cooperation, sharing, language and social skills.
EMOTIONAL HEALTH AND HAPPINESS:
Ministrike classes provide a structured environment for your child to express, manage and learn all about their emotions in a positive and supportive way. This is particularly beneficial in promoting emotional well-being, the lessons learned on the mats can be translated and used by parents off the mats, at home, in school and in every day life.
COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT:
Learning martial arts involves your child memorising sequences and understanding techniques. At your childs current stage of development, they are able to process 2-3 moves or instructions at a time. Practising this cognitive engagement contributes to your child’s intellectual development.
BUILDING A SPECIAL PARENT-CHILD BOND:
When you participate in our Ministrike classes with your child, it creates a special bonding experience. Shared activities promote communication and strengthen the unique parent-child relationship, resulting in better communication and understanding in the parent and child relationship.
”It was all worth the perseverance…”
”Our eldest child was 3 years old who started after a friend recommended us. At first, he was constantly on and off the mats and didn’t really pay attention to what he was supposed to doing. This went on for weeks, to the point where we seriously thought about packing it in.
We persevered and all of a sudden, everything clicked with him. He’s now 10 years old and has graduated to Juniors. He is thriving and loves Excel. His youngest brother, aged 5, is now in Ministrike classes and he’s loving it!
For us, as parents, it was all worth the perseverance…”
– Rachel, Callum and Finlays Mum

Ministrike FAQs
It’s never too early to instil positive habits and values. Our program has been carefully crafted to accommodate various age groups, starting from aged 4 years. Our teachers provide age-appropriate instruction, along with parent participation, creating a foundation for a lifelong journey in martial arts
It’s not uncommon for children to go through a period of adjustment when first starting. Our teachers are skilled in managing such situations with patience and understanding. We encourage parents to be consistent and regular in bringing children to training so they can quickly get into the routine of of their new journey with us at Excel.
For young children, starting with 1 to 2 classes per week is often sufficient. This allows them to gradually adapt to the routine and enjoy the learning process without feeling overwhelmed. We would always recommend at least twice a week training to get the best out of the programme, especially before transitioning to Juniors.
Yes, this will be done automatically when your child is ready to transition to Juniors. The Junior program is more comprehensive than Ministrike, offering a greater depth of learning and practice. Earning Black Belt requires dedication and hard work, and attending training sessions at least twice a week proves highly beneficial for students. This frequency allows for the necessary repetition and practice, fostering engagement and success in making progress. Opting for training at Excel is not just a choice; it’s a commitment to the Black Belt goal and beyond, reflecting a lifestyle choice dedicated to personal growth and achievement.
Our academy values parent involvement in your child’s journey. While parents are typically welcome on the mats, we understand that comfort levels may vary. You’re encouraged to join in, but if there is a reason you can’t, let us know and we’d be only too happy to take over. We have a designated seating area right next to the mats where you can still observe your child’s progress.
